The victims, residents say, are often people returning from villages, travelling with cash, or boarding vehicles at informal stops.

Residents are not merely warning of “kidnappers on the road.” They are describing a precise modus operandi: gangs that lure passengers with the appearance of legitimate transport, that target people from villages who have just sold goods and are carrying cash, and that have allegedly learned to bribe their way past checkpoints with small sums. One widely circulated video stressed that this is “not Boko Haram or generic bandits but a local, organised operation.”
The kidnappers, according to the alerts, are demanding million‑naira ransoms, and some victims have been snatched from inside their homes — a detail that has added to the fear spreading through neighbourhoods along the Benin‑Agbor corridor.
Police Response and Community Vigilance
The June 1 alerts did not come in a vacuum. Only weeks earlier, police recorded significant successes: five suspected kidnappers were arrested in Akoko‑Edo on May 13, and a woman was rescued from captors in Jattu. The Egoro Na‑oka community in Esan West had also previously petitioned the government, warning that kidnappers were exploiting the deplorable state of roads that slow vehicles to a crawl.
But the latest warnings suggest the criminals have adapted, and the response from official channels has been slow. As of Monday evening, no formal police statement had addressed the specific claims circulating in the viral videos. That silence has only amplified the anxiety, pushing residents to rely on community‑to‑community alerts.
What Residents Are Being Told to Do
Based on the circulating alerts, community leaders are urging residents to take the following precautions:
- Avoid late‑night travel on the Benin‑Agbor Road and Ikpobahill axis.
- Use only registered motor parks and avoid flagging down random vehicles.
- Do not display cash when travelling from villages to the city.
- Share trip details with family before boarding any vehicle.
