Wike's PDP Faction Names Senator Sandy Onor as 2027 Presidential Candidate; Jonathan's Camp Watches Closely
Former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom announced Senator Sandy Onor as the consensus presidential candidate of the Wike-led PDP faction.
The Peoples Democratic Party's long-running internal war produced its most concrete outcome yet on Tuesday, when the faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike named Senator Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 election. The announcement, made at the party's Wadata Plaza secretariat by former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom, was designed to project order and momentum. It landed instead as a provocation — a gauntlet thrown at the feet of the rival PDP faction and, perhaps more significantly, at former President Goodluck Jonathan, whose own path to the ticket was cleared by a Federal High Court ruling only a day earlier.
Senator Onor, a former Cross River State gubernatorial candidate, emerged unopposed after what Ortom described as consultations and voice votes across all 36 states. There were no other aspirants. In a party as fractious as the PDP, a consensus candidate without a challenger is less a sign of unity than of a carefully managed process — and the management, everyone in that hall knew, traces back to Wike. The FCT Minister, who remains a PDP member while serving in an APC government, has insisted that the Wadata Plaza leadership is the legitimate National Working Committee. Tuesday's event was the institutional expression of that claim.
The timing is telling. Jonathan's eligibility ruling has scrambled the opposition calculus. His supporters have been urging him to run, and the PDP faction led by Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed has positioned itself as the more natural home for a Jonathan candidacy. By announcing Onor now, the Wike camp is signalling that it will not wait for the former president to make up his mind — and that its 2027 ticket will not be held in reserve for anyone.
For Jonathan, the question has always been whether he wants to return to the arena. The Wike faction's move changes that question subtly but importantly: it asks not just whether he wants to run, but whether he is willing to fight for the platform. The PDP is now a house with two kitchens, each preparing its own meal. Senator Onor has been served his. Whether Jonathan will step forward to order his own is the decision that will shape the next chapter of this crisis.
