Tambuwal Predicts 2027 Elections Will Mirror 1979 Multi-Party Contest as Kwankwaso Backs NDC's Southern Zoning — Says "It Is Good for Us to Have Consensus"
Former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso have both weighed in on the shape of the 2027 presidential contest.
Former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal has predicted that the 2027 presidential election will more closely resemble the historic 1979 multi-party contest than the 2023 poll that produced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Speaking on Channels Television on Thursday, Tambuwal cited the 1979 election — which featured five major candidates: Shehu Shagari, Obafemi Awolowo, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Aminu Kano, and Waziri Ibrahim — as the best historical parallel for the fragmented political landscape now taking shape.
"I see a replay of 1979 in 2027 rather than the 2023 general elections. You wait and see. The dynamics of today are different," Tambuwal said. The comment reflects the reality of an opposition that has splintered across multiple platforms — the PDP, ADC, NDC, Labour Party, and others — rather than consolidating behind a single candidate as in 2019 or 2023.
Meanwhile, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has thrown his weight behind the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) decision to zone its presidential ticket to the South. "It's good for us to have a consensus. There is no point in fighting. What is key now is not a president from the North or South. What is key is quality leadership," Kwankwaso said. He confirmed a working alliance with Peter Obi and noted that the NDC ticket would return to the North after four years, a rotational arrangement designed to keep the fragile coalition together.
The twin developments — Tambuwal's multi-party forecast and Kwankwaso's endorsement of southern zoning — signal that Nigeria's political elite is rapidly recalculating ahead of 2027. With Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi filing ADC nomination forms, Seyi Makinde declaring under a PDP/APM alliance, and the NDC emerging as a third force, the 2027 field is already the most crowded in recent memory. Whether that fragmentation benefits the incumbent or produces a genuine democratic contest remains the open question.
