SERAP Asks INEC to Probe Alleged N800 Billion Political Fund Diverted by APC Governors, Threatens Legal Action Within 7 Days
SERAP has given INEC seven days to launch an investigation into allegations of massive political fund diversion by APC governors.
The Socio‑Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has turned up the heat on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), demanding an urgent and independent investigation into allegations that governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have diverted a staggering ₦800 billion in public funds for political and campaign purposes. In a formal letter dated May 16, 2026, and addressed to INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, the civil society group set a seven‑day deadline for action — after which it will consider pursuing the matter in court.
The letter, made public on Monday, specifically references reports of systematic monthly deductions from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) allocations to APC‑controlled states. According to the allegations, these deductions were funnelled into a dedicated campaign fund linked to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's 2027 re‑election bid. SERAP argues that such a scheme, if proven, represents a fundamental breach of both the Electoral Act and the Nigerian Constitution, which prohibit the use of state resources for partisan political advantage.
"This is not a matter of rumour or political speculation," the SERAP letter reads. "It is a matter of public record that requires the electoral umpire to exercise its statutory duty to investigate and, where necessary, refer for prosecution." The organisation is asking INEC to compel full disclosure from the APC and its governors — including the identities of donors to any campaign fund, the lawful origin of the contributions, and a complete accounting of how the money has been spent.
The seven‑day ultimatum has placed INEC in a difficult position. The commission has historically been cautious about wading into politically charged financial investigations, particularly when they involve sitting governors. But with a general election on the horizon and public trust in the electoral process already fragile, the pressure to act is mounting. The APC has not yet issued a formal response, but party sources have dismissed the allegations as "opposition‑sponsored mischief." For SERAP, the clock is ticking — and the next move belongs to INEC.
