Peter Obi Emerges as Sole NDC Presidential Aspirant as Party Closes Nomination Form Sales — Screening Begins May 19

Peter Obi is the sole aspirant for the NDC presidential ticket after the party closed its nomination form sales.

Peter Obi has cleared the first hurdle of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primary without a single challenger. The former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party candidate was the only politician to purchase and complete the party's Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms before the midnight Sunday deadline. When the forms window shut, the NDC confirmed what many had already suspected: Obi is, for now, the sole aspirant for the party's 2027 ticket.

The development is less about a coronation and more about what it says of the opposition's mood. At a moment when the PDP and ADC are hosting crowded, fractious fields — Atiku, Amaechi, Makinde, and Jonathan among them — the NDC has quietly presented a united front. Whether that unity holds through screening and convention is the question, but the optics are difficult to ignore. Party screening commenced on Monday, May 19, and runs through May 26, during which Obi's credentials will be examined like any other aspirant's. The NDC has extended the deadline for governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and State Assembly forms to May 24, signalling a deliberate push to build a full electoral machine, not merely a presidential flag.

Obi's unchallenged emergence also strengthens the hand of those within the NDC who have advocated for a consensus candidate. Kwankwaso, who has publicly backed southern zoning and confirmed his working alliance with Obi, has said repeatedly that what matters is "quality leadership," not regional arithmetic. With no other aspirant in the race, the NDC's path to a consensus ticket looks less like a negotiation and more like an inevitability. The party's leadership will now be under pressure to manage the screening process transparently and avoid the impression that the primary is a formality. But for now, the NDC has done what no other opposition party has managed: it has simplified its presidential field before the race even began.
