Ohanaeze Youth Council Warns Tinubu: Free Nnamdi Kanu or Risk 2027 Electoral Backlash in the South-East
The Ohanaeze Youth Council has issued a fresh ultimatum to President Tinubu over the continued detention of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu.
The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC) has issued a stark warning to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally, or face a significant electoral backlash from the South‑East in the 2027 presidential election. In a strongly worded statement released on Tuesday, the apex Igbo youth body described the continued detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader as unconstitutional and a violation of international legal standards, arguing that it would be "unrealistic" for the Tinubu administration to expect substantial electoral support from the region while Kanu remains in custody.
The OYC National President, Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, drew a direct parallel between Kanu's case and the 1984 Dikko affair, when the attempted rendition of former Minister Umaru Dikko from London sparked a diplomatic crisis between Nigeria and the United Kingdom. "Just as the Dikko affair became a stain on Nigeria's international reputation, the manner of Kanu's arrest, rendition, and continued detention is a permanent scar on our democracy," Igboayaka said. He insisted that Kanu's abduction in Kenya in June 2021 and subsequent extraordinary rendition to Nigeria was a breach of international law that the courts have since acknowledged, making his continued detention legally untenable.
A Political Calculation Ahead of 2027
The OYC's statement was explicit in linking Kanu's fate to the electoral choices of the South‑East in 2027. Igboayaka argued that the region — which delivered heavy support for the Labour Party in the 2023 presidential election — is watching closely how the Tinubu administration handles the Kanu case. "No one should expect the South‑East to queue behind a government that continues to hold Nnamdi Kanu in violation of court rulings," the statement read. "If the presidency wants to make inroads into Alaigbo in 2027, the release of Kanu is not negotiable. It is the irreducible minimum."
The warning adds yet another layer of complexity to Tinubu's re‑election arithmetic. With the Labour Party's Peter Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar already circling, and with Governor Seyi Makinde set to declare his own presidential ambition on Thursday, the South‑East remains a critical swing region. The OYC's intervention signals that the Kanu issue — far from fading — may become one of the defining electoral fault lines in 2027.
