NSC Hails "Landmark Week" as Tinubu Approves Nigeria to Host CAF General Assembly and 2026 Awards Ceremony
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved Nigeria's bid to host two major CAF events during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi.
The National Sports Commission (NSC) has hailed the past seven days as a landmark week for Nigerian sports, capped by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's approval of Nigeria's bid to host the 48th CAF Ordinary General Assembly and the 2026 CAF Awards Ceremony. The twin hosting rights, confirmed by NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau after discussions between President Tinubu and CAF president Patrice Motsepe at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, represent a significant diplomatic and organisational victory for the country.
"This is a proud moment for Nigerian football," Gusau said. "Hosting the CAF General Assembly and the Awards Ceremony is not just about logistics — it is about respect. It shows that Africa recognises Nigeria as a serious and capable host." The events are expected to draw football administrators, stars, and media from across the continent, providing a major boost to Nigeria's sports economy and international image.
The CAF announcement was the centrepiece of a week that also saw Team Nigeria deliver commanding performances across multiple sporting fronts. At the African Athletics Championships in Accra, the country surged to the top of the medal table, powered by Tobi Amusan's third consecutive 100m hurdles title and multiple podium finishes. At home, Nigeria dominated the African Cycling Championships in Abuja, collecting 16 medals. Meanwhile, at the World Relays in Botswana earlier in the month, the mixed 4x400m team secured World Athletics Championships qualification.
NSC Director General described the string of successes as "the result of deliberate planning and investment," noting that the hosting approvals, athletics triumphs, and cycling dominance all pointed to a sports ecosystem beginning to fire on all cylinders. With the CAF events still months away, the momentum is building — and Nigeria is positioning itself at the centre of African sport.
