NDC Screens Peter Obi for 2027 Presidential Race as PDP Clears Jonathan to Contest — ADC Launches "Rise Up Naija" Youth Movement

The machinery of Nigeria's 2027 presidential election ground forward on multiple fronts this week, as the opposition parties pressed ahead with screening, clearing, and mobilising their candidates. At the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), former Anambra Governor Peter Obi faced the party's screening panel on Tuesday, May 19. A day later, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) cleared former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest. And on Thursday, May 21, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) launched a youth movement that took direct aim at the old political guard.
Obi emerged from his NDC screening in Abuja with the calm confidence of a man who knows he is the party's sole presidential aspirant. "The process focused on constitutional qualifications, governance capacity, and the candidates' vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria," he told journalists. The screening was a formality, but an important one. It signalled that the NDC is moving methodically through its internal processes, building a credible alternative to the APC and the fractious PDP, rather than anointing a candidate without due diligence.
The PDP, meanwhile, made its own decisive move. On Wednesday, the party cleared Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election on its platform, setting the stage for a potential comeback that would rewrite Nigeria's political history. Jonathan, who has been coy about his intentions since his dramatic "I have heard you" statement earlier this month, now has a clear path to the PDP ticket — though the party's internal factional wars remain unresolved.
While the two older parties focused on individuals, the ADC chose to focus on a movement. On Thursday, the party launched the "Rise Up Naija Movement" (RUN) in Abuja, a youth‑focused initiative that explicitly took aim at the political class. "Age is not a credential," the ADC's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, declared. "The APC is held together largely by access to power rather than ideology. The ADC is the future of politics in Nigeria." The message was unmistakable: the old parties are running on personalities; the ADC wants to run on ideas. Whether that message can translate into votes remains the unanswerable question of the 2027 race — but for now, the opposition is clearing its decks, and the field is becoming clearer by the day.
