Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde officially declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidency on Thursday, May 14, before a massive crowd at Mapo Hall in Ibadan, unveiling an alliance between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples' Movement (APM). The governor used the moment to launch the "Reset Nigeria Movement," a campaign platform he says is built on economic revival, institutional reform, and a direct appeal to voters to reject what he called "federal might."
"Nigeria cannot continue with politics as usual," Makinde told the cheering crowd. "We must reset our nation, rebuild public trust, and strengthen institutions. The era where a few people sit in a room and decide who leads this country is over. The people will decide." The rally, held at the historic venue that has witnessed many of Ibadan's defining political moments, was attended by party officials, traditional rulers, and supporters from across the South‑West and beyond.
Makinde's manifesto, as outlined in his declaration, rests on six pillars: economic growth and job creation, education, healthcare, infrastructure, power sector reforms, and security. He argued that his record in Oyo State — where he has pursued an independent fiscal and developmental path — is proof that a state‑level success story can be replicated nationally. Earlier on Wednesday, the governor had expressed confidence that "federal might will not work" in 2027, insisting that Nigerian voters are now more politically aware than in previous cycles.
The PDP/APM alliance reflects Makinde's strategy to build a broad coalition beyond the fractured PDP. While he remains a PDP governor, the partnership with APM gives him a platform that sidesteps the party's internal turmoil and positions him as a candidate capable of uniting diverse interests. The move also signals that Makinde intends to compete aggressively in the North, the South‑East, and the Middle Belt, not just his South‑West base.
Makinde's entry further cements what analysts are calling the most fragmented opposition field in decades. With Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi filing for the ADC ticket, Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso consolidating the NDC, and Goodluck Jonathan formally in the PDP race, the 2027 contest is shaping up to be a multi‑polar battle.
