Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has pushed back hard against the idea that his deepening political partnership with Peter Obi is a northern‑southern marriage of convenience. In an exclusive interview with Trust TV's *Sunday Politics*, Kwankwaso insisted that the alliance — which now anchors the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) — is driven by something simpler: a shared conviction that Nigeria is broken and needs competent, non‑sectional leadership to fix it.
"We discovered our goals were largely the same," Kwankwaso said. "Education, security, jobs for young people, making governance work — that is what brought us together. Not religion, not region." The statement was a direct rebuttal to critics who have painted the NDC as a northern plot to split the opposition vote and hand President Tinubu an easy path to re‑election. Kwankwaso dismissed that charge as lazy. "Those saying we are helping the APC are not serious. We are building an alternative. The APC and PDP have had their chances. Nigerians can see the results."
The NDC has now closed the sale of presidential nomination forms, and party screening begins today, May 19. Forms for other elective offices remain open until May 24 — a sign that the party is methodically building a full legislative ticket, not just a presidential vehicle. On the internal politics of Kano, Kwankwaso did not hold back. He described the split between him and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf as a "big mistake" for the governor, warning that political betrayal had never ended well in the state. The remark signals that the battle for Kano — the North‑West's most populous state and a traditional electoral bellwether — will be as fiercely fought within the opposition as against the ruling party.
As the 2027 race takes shape, Kwankwaso's message is clear: the NDC intends to compete everywhere, not just in pockets, and it intends to win.
