Jonathan Finally Declares for 2027 Presidency, Picks PDP Nomination Form — Says “I Have Heard the People and I Will Not Disappoint”
Former President Goodluck Jonathan made his long-awaited declaration at the PDP national secretariat in Abuja, picking up his nomination forms.
The wait is over. Goodluck Jonathan has formally entered the 2027 presidential race. On Friday, May 29, the former president arrived at the People's Democratic Party's Wadata Plaza secretariat in Abuja, surrounded by a crowd of supporters, former ministers, and the curious onlookers of a political moment years in the making. He picked up his expression of interest and nomination forms, then delivered the words his supporters had been waiting to hear. "I have heard the people. I have consulted widely. I will not disappoint. Nigeria needs healing, and I am ready to lead that mission."
The declaration was characteristically Jonathan — calm, measured, and heavy with the weight of a man who knows he has been asked to return to the office he once occupied. His entry brings clarity to a PDP that has been at war with itself for months. It also brings conflict. The faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike had, only days earlier, named Senator Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate. That declaration was widely seen as an attempt to pre‑empt Jonathan's move. It failed. The former president's arrival at Wadata Plaza, the headquarters of the Umar Damagum‑led faction, signals that he has chosen his side in the PDP's internal struggle — and it is not Wike's.
Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed, who leads the PDP faction that has positioned itself as the party's legitimate mainstream, welcomed Jonathan's declaration with open arms. He described it as "a victory for the soul of the party." That sentiment will resonate with many PDP loyalists who see Jonathan as the party's best chance to reclaim power from the APC. But the road to the ticket is littered with obstacles — not least the legal and procedural battles that will inevitably follow the nomination. For now, though, the former president is in the race. And the 2027 campaign season has just gained its most unpredictable contender.
