Flood Submerges Over 100 Homes in Etsako Central After Heavy Weekend Rainfall — Residents Call on Edo Government to Dredge River Niger Tributaries
Over 100 homes in Anegbette and Udaba were submerged on Saturday after hours of torrential rainfall caused River Niger tributaries to overflow.
For the second consecutive rainy season, communities along the River Niger's tributaries in Etsako Central have been swallowed by floodwaters. On Saturday, May 30, hours of relentless rainfall caused the banks to burst, submerging more than 100 houses in the Anegbette and Udaba communities and forcing over 500 residents to flee with little more than the clothes on their backs.
The displaced have been packed into a primary school in Fugar, the local government headquarters, where classrooms not built for habitation are now serving as emergency shelters. Families sleep on bare floors, and children who should be in school are instead queuing for food handouts. Community leaders say the flooding was not a surprise; it was an inevitability. The tributaries that feed the River Niger in this area have not been dredged in years, leaving them too shallow to contain the volume of water that comes with heavy rain. "We have been shouting about this for years," one elder in Anegbette told Unuevbo TV. "Every rainy season, we lose our homes. Nothing is ever done."
The Edo State Emergency Management Agency (Edo‑SEMA) has deployed a rapid assessment team to the area and promised the immediate distribution of mattresses, food, and medicine. But emergency relief, however swift, is not the solution the community is demanding. They want the tributaries dredged, the waterways cleared, and a permanent end to a cycle of displacement that has become as predictable as the rain itself.
