Tinubu Declares Readiness for 2027, Takes Swipe at Opposition: "I Am Ready to Break the Shackles of Poverty"
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially drawn the battle line for the 2027 general elections, firing back at critics who dismiss his policies and directly confronting the emerging opposition coalition. Speaking on Thursday, April 16, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the President formally declared his intention to seek re-election, describing his mission as a "lifetime opportunity to break the shackles of poverty and ignorance."
'I Am Ready to Break the Shackles of Poverty'
Addressing the leadership and coordinators of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors (RHA)—the administration's main grassroots mobilisation vehicle—President Tinubu declared that his administration is focused on delivering meaningful governance rather than engaging in what he called "unnecessary noise."
"I want to break the shackles of ignorance and poverty, put freedom in the hearts of Nigerians, and make sure democracy survives," he declared. Taking an unmistakable jab at the opposition, Tinubu said he wanted to give Nigerians something different from the "rascality or noise-making of a street convention"—a pointed dismissal of the African Democratic Congress's recent national gathering, which he branded a disorderly, outdoor assembly.
'They Want to Scare Me Off? It's a Lie'
The President also issued a direct challenge to political opponents attempting to intimidate him. "They want to scare me off? It's a lie. I've been through this path before, and if I have to come back over and over again, I'll do the same thing," he declared.
Reflecting on his political journey, Tinubu noted: "During the primaries that got me here, it was tough. During the election, it was tough. Now that I'm here, all I can promise is that I won't give up." He also emphasised the importance of the rule of law, urging all democrats to respect the judiciary even when court rulings are unfavourable.
"We cannot submit to disobedience of a lawful order of the court; we must embrace the judiciary, whether it favours us or not," he said, reaffirming his commitment to the principles of democracy and separation of powers.
Taking Aim at the ADC Coalition
President Tinubu launched a scathing attack on the ADC's leadership, particularly targeting former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. "Look at every one of them, no one without history," Tinubu said, referencing Atiku's past role as Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation.
"He privatised the steel industry in Delta. Is it working today? Not one ounce. They privatised Ajaokuta. Is it working today?" In another swipe, the President accused the opposition of trying to "privatise another man's political party," a clear reference to their takeover of the ADC structure, which he claimed had backfired.
Atiku Fires Back: 'Tinubu Is Dead on Arrival'
The former Vice President was quick to respond, insisting that a united opposition candidate would hand President Tinubu a decisive defeat in 2027. "For all I know, a coalition candidate is facing Bola Tinubu. Bola Tinubu is dead on arrival," Atiku declared in an interview on ARISE NEWS.
He argued that the opposition coalition holds enough political weight across Nigeria's regions to secure victory. Atiku also launched a blistering critique of the current administration, calling it the worst he has witnessed. "Everything is wrong with President Tinubu's government; in my life, this is the worst administration I have seen," he said, faulting the government's record on insecurity, economic hardship, and governance.
ADC Warns: 'You Should Be Afraid of Major Defeat'
The ADC also issued a formal statement warning President Tinubu to be concerned about a "major defeat" in 2027. The party's National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said: "What Nigerians saw was not the confidence of a leader in control. It was the anxiety of a President increasingly disconnected from the reality of hardship, insecurity, and frustration facing millions of citizens."
The ADC rejected the "street convention" narrative, insisting that the government had deliberately denied opposition parties access to public venues such as Eagle Square. It accused Tinubu of hypocrisy for preaching separation of powers while allegedly weakening institutions meant to serve as checks and balances.
'Tinubu Does Not Have the Right to Speak' – Amaechi
Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi also weighed in, declaring that the President has no moral right to speak given the severity of the economic crisis. "Everybody is suffering, everybody is looking for food to eat. People can't buy fuel, can't travel. The airlines are threatening to increase the cost of transportation; everything is skyrocketing," Amaechi said on Channels Television.
"President Tinubu does not have the right to speak… Nigerians are waiting to vote him out," he added.
Presidency: 'It Remains the South's Turn'
The Presidency responded by emphasising the North–South power rotation arrangement. Special Adviser Bayo Onanuga insisted that since former President Muhammadu Buhari completed eight years in office, President Tinubu should be allowed to complete his own two terms. Onanuga argued that Atiku's 2023 presidential bid violated the zoning arrangement, and that he should "bury the thought of running again."
Massive Endorsements Build Momentum
Despite the opposition's criticism, President Tinubu continues to gather significant political support. The Integrity Group of Nigeria, also known as the Renewed Hope Agenda Ambassadors, formally endorsed the President for a second term, declaring "Aso Rock No Vacancy 2027" at a national symposium in Abuja.
The APC North-West Zone has vowed to deliver the highest number of votes for President Tinubu in 2027. APC leaders in Adamawa State have also declared that the President's re-election is "not negotiable," with Congress Chairman Ephraim Agber stating that "President Tinubu has no competitor for the presidential election."
